Eolas and Microsoft

If you have not had a chance to keep up with the Eolas/Microsoft court cases, you can read these two brief articles: Microsoft had appealed a lower court decision against them to a federal appeals court. One of the major parts of this issue is whether Microsoft infringed on a patent by Eolas, that allowed plug-in-like functionality. If Microsoft loses, then the ability of browsers to use plug-in functionality will change dramatically. The federal appeals court, however, agreed with Microsoft that there was prior art available -- the Viola browser -- that the lower court did not allow. So, the case is going back to the lower court with the proviso that the Viola browser should be taken into consideration. Microsoft still may not win this case, but the odds are better now.
